My church said that homosexuality was a sin so I was certainly not going to seek out books that included it. If the thought of me not being straight even occurred to me, it would be in the course of asking myself why I’m thinking about that since it’s so ridiculous and then it would be quickly chased away. I spent the next 8 years or so denying my sexuality. I got pulled into a rather fundamentalist part of Christianity around middle school. It understood me in a way I wasn’t used to books doing. The Second Mango by Shira Glassman made me happier than any book I can remember.
